Discover our story
Both our winery and the ancient Phrygian capital, Gordion, take their name from Gordias, the city’s legendary founder. Gordias was once a farmer in Macedonia until one day an eagle landed on his ox cart. He took this as a sign that he was destined to become a king.
According to legend, when the Phrygians were in disarray, they consulted an oracle. The oracle told them that the first man to arrive at the temple with his cart would be chosen as king of the Phrygians. The first to arrive was Gordias.
Thus, Gordias became the new king of the Phrygians, founded the city of Gordion, and declared it the capital of Phrygia.
In 2009, we named our winery Gordias in his honor.
Among the most revered deities of Anatolia was Kybele, the goddess of abundance and fertility. With that same spirit of abundance we wish to flow into our wines, we strive to create new stories each year.
Gordias wines, representing the Phrygians’ devotion to agriculture, are rooted in strong, long-living vines that breathe new life into the soil. From these roots spring Kalecik Karası, Hasandede, Sauvignon Blanc, and Fesleğen grapes, infused with the distinctive character of the steppe terroir. Just as Alexander the Great cut the Gordian Knot and built connections wherever he went, Gordias Vineyards embody the mythology of their land and carry its spirit into every bottle meant to age gracefully.
